Yacht cleaning at berth: areas, access and quotation
Yacht cleaning at berth begins with authorised marina and vessel access, followed by an agreed scope with the captain, chief steward, yacht manager or appointed representative. Interior areas can include cabins, bathrooms, saloon, galley, circulation, reachable glass, carpets, upholstery and finished joinery. Exterior decks, technical compartments, laundry, dishes, provisioning and waste are not assumed to be included; each must be assigned and qualified.
The quote depends on the marina, yacht size, decks, occupancy, materials, permitted equipment, available power and water, access rules and the time before owner arrival, departure or charter. Wood, lacquer, leather, metal, stone, textiles and glass require methods compatible with their known finishes. MayClean asks for authorised photographs, a zone list, onboard instructions and the name of the person who will brief the team and accept the completed areas.
01
Define the scope with the authorised onboard contact
First identify the person authorised to grant access, provide instructions and accept the result. Depending on the vessel this may be the captain, chief steward, yacht manager, owner representative or shipyard contact. The owner should not automatically be treated as the operating contact. The quotation records the marina, berth information shared securely, timing and person present. Confidentiality means collecting only the photographs and vessel information needed to prepare the service.
The interior is then mapped by deck and zone: saloon, cabins, bathrooms, galley, stairs, glazing, carpets and upholstery. For each area, state whether the request is routine care, preparation before arrival, recovery after a trip or deeper cleaning. Private, technical, occupied or maintenance zones can remain closed. This mapping prevents the phrase “complete interior” from conflicting with crew instructions and allows realistic time for movement through compact spaces.
- Marina, berth, timing and authorised contact
- Vessel type, approximate length and number of decks
- Open, private, technical and excluded zones
- Routine care, owner arrival, charter or yard context
- Person responsible for the briefing and review
02
Marina access, badges, parking and boarding
Entry to a marina may require registration, identification, a badge, vehicle pass or attendance by a crew member. Procedures vary and must be confirmed with the marina or vessel representative. Parking may be distant from the berth and change how equipment is carried. Pontoon width, gangway, steps, freeboard and handling rules also matter. No bulky machine should arrive without confirmation that it is permitted and can be moved safely aboard.
The onboard briefing covers footwear, protective measures, storage, approved sockets, water, usable facilities and alarm procedures. Access may change with wind, tide or port operations. If the yacht is fuelling, loading provisions, preparing to depart or receiving contractors, the activities need to be coordinated. MayClean checks these constraints before confirming the slot so the service time is not lost to approvals or unplanned movements.
03
Joinery, lacquer, metal and delicate finished surfaces
A yacht interior combines many sensitive finishes in a confined route: varnished wood, high-gloss lacquer, leather, stainless steel, chrome, glass, stone and painted surfaces. A cloth or product used in one area may be unsuitable in the next. Crew and manufacturer instructions take priority when available. Direct spraying, excess moisture and abrasive action are avoided near fittings and equipment. Oxidation, scratches, damaged varnish and material alteration must be distinguished from removable soil.
The quotation can separate routine presentation from an attempt to improve a marked area. A local test is appropriate when previous treatment is unknown. Displays, controls, sensors and technical equipment are handled only under explicit instruction. Glazing may have films or coatings and exterior access may be restricted. This discipline protects the vessel and gives the crew a clear understanding of what is cleaned, lightly dusted or left to a specialist.
- Onboard product instructions available
- Wood, lacquer, leather, metal, glass and stone identified
- Controls and technical equipment excluded without instruction
- Scratches, oxidation and existing defects recorded
- Local test used for an uncertain finish
04
Carpets, upholstery, mattresses and drying conditions
Marine textiles need the same fibre assessment as a private residence with additional constraints of space and ventilation. Count seats, cushions, mattresses, rugs and carpet area. Look for fibre information, care labels, stain history and previous treatments. Fixed upholstery can contain thick padding and sensitive seams. Carpet may cover hatches or equipment that must not receive moisture. A local test remains important when colour stability or finishing behaviour is uncertain.
Drying must suit the vessel ventilation and departure schedule. Wet extraction immediately before an arrival or long closure may be inappropriate. The captain or crew confirms openings, air-conditioning and zones that can remain unavailable. Deep odour, leaks or mould are not ordinary upholstery cleaning and need separate diagnosis. The quote should therefore state the proposed process, estimated return-to-use window and limitations on stains, wear or colour loss.
05
Preparation before owner arrival, departure or charter
Before an owner arrival, priorities often centre on presentation: cabins, bathrooms, saloon, visible surfaces, interior glass and contact points. The crew may retain linen, bed-making, dishes and provisioning or assign a precise part of them. Before departure, the slot must leave enough time for drying and for every approved item to return to place. After charter or an event, condition, waste, dishes, textiles and heavily used areas should be described rather than automatically repeating the routine brief.
A shared checklist prevents duplicated work. It states who handles beds, linen, amenities, floors, glazing, outside areas and final review. Personal objects are not moved without instruction. Completion photographs are taken only when authorised and without revealing sensitive information. This allows MayClean to work as targeted support without disrupting the established chain of responsibility aboard.
- Actual arrival, departure or review time
- Division of tasks with the crew
- Linen, beds, amenities, dishes and waste assigned
- Drying time before use
- Confidentiality and authorised photography rules
06
How to compare and approve a yacht cleaning quotation
Check that the quotation names the marina, timing, decks or zones, textiles and operating context. “Interior” or “complete cleaning” should be supported by detail. Exterior decks, technical areas, linen and provisioning remain separate unless expressly stated. Review access, utilities, permitted equipment and the crew’s role. An offer that ignores these conditions may underestimate the service or assume authorisations that do not exist.
The document should state limitations on marked surfaces, stains and uncertain finishes. The acceptance process identifies who briefs the team, who can change the request and who reviews the result. A berth, timing or departure change requires confirmation. MayClean assesses work in Monaco, Cannes, Antibes and other Riviera marinas according to access, vessel and resources. Discretion is not a substitute for organisation; it depends on it.

Frequently asked questions
Answers before making a decision
Does MayClean clean yacht exteriors?
This guide concerns interiors at berth. Exterior areas are included only after their access, equipment, marina rules and exact scope have been reviewed.
Who should book the service?
The request can come from an owner or manager, but access and instructions must be confirmed by the authorised operating contact such as the captain, chief steward or yacht manager.
Can carpets and upholstery be cleaned aboard?
In suitable conditions, yes, after fibre, stain, nearby equipment, ventilation and drying have been assessed. A sensitive item may need another solution.
Can MayClean work before an urgent owner arrival?
The marina, access, scope, drying time and available resources are assessed. Urgency cannot override vessel authorisation or safe operating conditions.
Editorial method
How this guide is prepared and checked
Erik Tentori checks this content against the information required to qualify a MayClean job: location, condition, materials, access, safety, deadline and expected result. Official references are linked when an external rule affects the scope. Examples help prepare an enquiry; they do not replace an assessment of the site or a quotation.
